The Musicians association of Malawi Womens Desk held a fundraising dinner dance at the Capital Hotel Marquee in Lilongwe on Friday 30 August 2013. The event was graced with the presence of the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture Rachael Mazombwe Zulu.

Master of ceremonies at the event was recent Big Brother Africa: The Chase housemate, Natasha Tonthola. During the event, Chimwemwe Mizaya, Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Cathreen Kayange, Maria Chidzanja Nkhoma and Eliza Kachali Kaunda were rewarded and recognised for their work. The artists were given the nod for their various contributions and roles in the Malawian music industry. The five each received 54cm TV screens courtesy of Luso TV as well as hampers from H. Adam Wholesalers. Maria Chidzanja Nkhoma received her award in absentia and was represented bt her daughter Geraldine.

The artists hailed the event organisers for organising the event, and supporting females in the male driven Malawian music industry. On their part, the organisers, represented by Martha Mituka, called on the ministry to assist them in purchasing musical equipment and infrastructure. The Minister, flanked by officials from her ministry including director of culture Elizabeth Gomani Chindebvu, also hailed MAM’s women’s desk for coming up with the event before announcing the ministry’s contribution of MWK100,000 towards the event. Multichoice Malawi also contributed a GOtv set which was auctioned by American auction which raised MWK60,000.

Performers during the event included The Roots famed for the hit “Bambo A Tereza”, Favoured Martha, Kachali Kaunda, Kamwendo Banda, Daka, Mizaya and Gloria Manong’a among others.
