Today marks exactly one year since Malawi lost one of its most iconic music legends, Soja Lucius Banda, and tributes are pouring in from all corners of the country.
Among those leading the tributes is Wendy Harawa, a long-time friend and musical partner of Lucius Banda, who took to her Facebook page to express her emotions.
“Today marks one year since you left us, Lucius Banda. Your presence still feels like a warm hug. You were more than a brother, a father figure, and someone I could rely on as a best friend and a guiding light. Your legacy lives on through your family and the music that speaks you, every day and everywhere. I write with tears to the memory, but it is with joy because today we chose to celebrate your life. Forever in our hearts. May your soul keep resting in peace,” wrote Wendy.
Lucius Banda’s son, Jonny Banda, popularly known as Mr Zembani, also took to social media to reflect on the journey since his father’s passing.
“The past year has been a rollercoaster, with highs and lows, but one thing remains constant, your impact on our lives. Family and friends you’ve turned into brothers and sisters have been a blessing. God bless them for their support,” he said.
Popular singer and producer Janta also joined in, posting a photo of himself with Lucius Banda, captioned simply: “Keep resting in peace Mboba.”
Poet Hudson Chamasowa has written a special poem titled “There was a Man Called Soja”, capturing the positive contributions Lucius Banda made to the music industry and Malawian society during his lifetime.
Meanwhile, Zembani Band has announced plans for a special memorial event in Lucius Banda’s honor. The remembrance ceremony is scheduled for August 16, 2025, at Zembani House in Balaka. The event will serve as a platform for family, friends, fellow musicians, and fans to come together and celebrate the life and legacy of the late music icon.
Lucius Banda, fondly referred to as “Soldier” by fans, remains a towering figure in Malawi’s music and political history, remembered for his fearless social commentary through music and his deep connection with the masses.
